Web Design Philosophy
I have a philosophy about the art of web design:
“Nobody likes a bandwidth hog.”
That’s it in a nutshell.
You see, visiting a new website is an experience. It can be a good experience, or it can be bad.
Expect a good experience when:
- site structure and navigation are immediately apparent to the user;
- the site is designed so that links, title text, micro-content, and main content are succinct, to the point, and readily identifiable;
- multimedia files, if used, are optimized for rapid display and to enhance overall comprehension of site messages;
- the underlying code validates against W3C standards;
- the code is optimized so that pages load quickly regardless of the user’s bandwidth connection.
A bad experience…, on the other hand, does not need an example. You’ll recognize it by the quick and steady rise in your blood pressure.
